Abstract:
Objective\ To investigate the blood pressure and prevalence rate of hypertension in Buddhist monks and nuns in Shaoguan district, and analyze their characteristics and related factors. \ Methods\ Three hundred seventy two Buddhist monks and nuns in 3 temples and 3 nunneries were surveyed in Shaoguan district, Guangdong province. Their age, weight, height, diet, blood pressure and morbidity rate of hypertension were registered. The results were compared with that in a cohort of inhabitants in same region. \ Result\ The standardized prevalence rate of hypertension of the Buddhists is 5.08%(1978 WHO standard) and 11.74%(1999 WHO/ISH standard). No significant difference on it between the Buddhists and Shaoguan ordinary inhabitants. \ Conclusion\ The prevalence rate of hypertension is not lower in the Buddhists than in the ordinary inhabitants. It may probably be related with their living style with less exercises, higher body weight index and more salt intake.
