Abstract:
Objective To investigate the trends in prevalence of hypertension among residents aged 18 years and over in urban and rural areas of Guangxi province from 1991 to 2009,aiming to enact and direct the treatment strategies of hypertension. Methods Data were collected from the Databanks of China Health and Nutrition Survey in1991,1993,1997,2000,2004,2006 and 2009,respectively. Residents aged 18 years and over from 6cities and countries in Guangxi were enrolled. The trends in prevalence of hypertension were compared between different survey years, districts, genders and ages. Results The prevalence of hypertension increased from 9.6% in 1991(standardized rate 11.7%)to 28.7%(standardized rate 24.2%)in 2009. The growth rate was 198.9% with an average level of 6.3% during a span of 18 years. Urban residents had higher prevalence rate, but lower growth rate(96.9%vs 365.5%,P<0.05)of hypertension than rural residents. More remarkably, the prevalence rate of hypertension did not differ significantly between urban and rural areas after 2006(P>0.05).The growth rate of hypertension increased significantly in women than in men(213.0% vs 184.2%,P<0.05),especially in rural areas(405.9%). Conclusion The prevalence of hypertension is increasing rapidly in women and rural residents, rendering it necessary to strengthen the prevention and control of hypertension among residents of Guangxi province.
