Abstract:

Methods The data on blood pressure, waist circumstance, height and weight in 3300 male and 3300 female students who were 7-18 years old and Han Chinese from urban and rural areas of Gansu province were collected from the study of National Students Physique Surveillance in 2010. Binary Logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the relationship between body mass index(BMI),waist-to-hip ratio(WhTR)and hypertension. Systolic and/or diastolic blood pressure≥95th cutoffs were defined as hypertension. Results The prevalence of hypertension was 9.71%. Majority of hypertension diagnosis were based on diastolic blood pressure≥95th cutoff. Overweight, obesity, waist circumstance≥75th cutoff and WhTR≥0.5were identified as risk factors for all types of hypertension(all P<0.05)and the risks increased as BMI and waist circumstance increased. Conclusion The effects of overweight, obesity, waist circumstance ≥75th cutoff and WhTR ≥0.5on different types of hypertension was different and waist circumstance is a better predictor for hypertension.
