Abstract:
Objective To investigate the distributions of ideal cardiovascular health behaviors and factors(including smoking, body mass index, physical activity, salt intake, total cholesterol, blood pressure and fasting blood glucose)among young and middle-aged healthy populations in Suzhou,Wuxi and Changzhou cities(the Su-Xi-Chang area)of Jiangsu province. Methods This was a cross-sectional study.A total of 11 062 participants aged from 20to64 years old who are living in the Su-Xi-Chang area and underwent health examination in the Taihu Rehabilitation Hospital from March 2013 to October 2013 were enrolled. The distributions of ideal cardiovascular health behaviors and factors,as well as the influential factors were analyzed. Results Only 129participants(1.2%)met all7 ideal cardiovascular health behaviors and factors, and 28.4% participants met 5to 7ideal cardiovascular health behaviors and factors, with a higher percentage noted in women than in men(48.5% vs 16.9%;P<0.01). The percentage of participants who met 5to 7ideal cardiovascular health behaviors and factors, regardless of genders, decreased with the increase of age.46.4% of participants met≤3ideal cardiovascular health metrics. Among all 7ideal cardiovascular health metrics, the prevalence of total cholesterol was the highest(74.3%),whereas that of salt intake was the lowest(19.4%).53.2% male participants smoked, and only 0.4%female participants were smokers. The prevalence of ideal blood pressure was significantly higher in participants under 55 years than that in participants of 55-<65years old. The mean number of ideal cardiovascular health behaviors and factors was higher in urban participants than in rural participants(3.63±1.46)vs(3.47±1.50);P<0.01. Young age, female gender and residency in urban areas were identified as significant protective factors for cardiovascular health odds ratio(95%CI):0.980(0.975-0.984),0.225(0.206-0.246)and 0.865(0.787-0.950),respectively. Conclusion The prevalence of ideal cardiovascular health behaviors and factors is extremely low among young and middle-aged healthy populations in the Su-Xi-Chang area of Jiangsu province. The distributions of ideal cardiovascular health behaviors and factors differ by gender and age. Specific promotion and interventions are needed to improve residents’ cardiovascular health conditions.
