Abstract:
Objective To assess the association between the duration of breast-feeding and the prevalence of female hypertension. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in 3community health service centers(Lugouqiao,Dahongmen and Puhuangyu)in Fengtai district of Beijing between April 2015 and June 2015. A total of 3477 parous women aged≥40years old were enrolled by cluster random sampling method. The information on demographic data, history of diseases, lifestyle and breast-feeding was collected, and anthropometric measurements(blood pressure, waist circumference and hip circumference)were recorded. Multivariate logistic regression and Cox’s proportional hazard regression model were used to analyze the relationship between the duration of breast-feeding and the prevalence of female hypertension. Results There were 1059 patients with hypertension, and the prevalence rate of hypertension was 30.4%. With an increase in the duration of breast-feeding,the prevalence rate of hypertension was decreased(P=0.003). Cox’s proportional hazard regression model showed that after adjusting for age, body mass index, educational level, smoking, family history of hypertension, age of menarche, age of child-bearing and age of menopause, the hazard ratio of hypertension in the subjects with 0month breast-feeding was 1.46(95% CI1.24-1.71)compared to the subjects with >12months breast-feeding. Conclusion Breast-feeding may decrease the risk of hypertension in female.
