Effects of with Valsartan or Indapamide on Sexual Activity in Middle-aged Hypertensive Men

  • Objective To evaluate the effects of Valsartan or Indapamide on sexual activity in middle-aged hypertensive men. Methods One hundred and twenty hypertensive men aged 35 to 55 years, all married and without any previous sexual dysfunction were randomly assigned to receive valsartan(80 mg/d) or indapamide(1.5 mg/d) for 8 weeks. Sexual activity was evaluated by using the international index erectile function-5 (IIEF-5) and the number of sexual intercourse episodes per week. Results The antihypertensive effects was similar in two groups. Valsartan significantly increased the score of sexual activity (from 14.1±5.4 to 17.7±4.6, P<0.01) and the episodes of sexual intercourse (from 2.2±1.1 to 3.6±1.2, P<0.01). In the Indapamide groups, antihypetensive treatment had no impact on the sexual activity in patients (score from 13.7±6.1 to 12.9±5.9; the episodes from 2.4±1.3 to 2.1±0.9, P>0.05). No one complained of sexual dysfunction in the Valsartan group, however, 6 men (10) treated with Indapamide complained about sexual dysfunction symptoms. Conclusion Beside antihypertensive effect, valsartan may obviously improve the sexual activity in hypertensive men. Indapamide appears had no influence on sexual function.
