Nocturnal hypertension: diagnosis, monitoring, and priority populations
-
Abstract
Blood pressure (BP) management should not only focus on daytime BP readings but also emphasize nighttime BP readings. The primary method for nighttime BP monitoring is ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM). Home BP monitors capable of measuring nighttime BP are also now clinically available. Nighttime home BP should be measured at 02:00, 03:00, and 04:00, and must be performed for at least two consecutive nights. An ideal method for nighttime BP monitoring should not disturb sleep. This article also describes the key populations that require nighttime BP monitoring.
